Cage nuts, also known as captive nuts, are a type of metal fastener consisting of an elastic outer shell and a square nut. The slotted structure of the outer shell positions the nut within pre-punched holes in sheet metal, while the square nut provides the internal threading for assembly. The gap between the outer shell and the square nut allows for some positional tolerance, compensating for minor misalignments in the installation holes.
Captive nuts are very easy to install. To begin, tilt one end of the outer shell and insert it into one side of the pre-punched hole. Then, using a specialized tool (or manually), push the other end of the slot into the opposite side of the hole to complete the installation. The shape of the pre-punched holes can vary, including square or rectangular holes. When installed in a rectangular hole, the captive nut can slide along the longer side, adapting to the installation environment. Additionally, when the rack is tilted, the captive nut can be installed at an angle. These nuts are commonly used in communication server cabinets, router cabinets, electrical enclosures, and similar applications.
