Pilot hole values are starting points - grain, moisture and screw condition all move them. When in doubt, drill the smaller hole and step up. A split board costs more than a minute of drilling.

Black screws rust on me

Most 'black' screws use black oxide - a cosmetic film with almost no barrier value. Ours is cathodic epoxy e-coat, the same process used on auto underbody parts. Salt spray tested 72+ hours. For wet exterior decks, step up to stainless instead.

Wood splits when I drive

Sharp needle point plus coarse thread cuts fibers instead of wedging them. In hardwood, drill a 3/32 in. pilot and the split problem mostly disappears. Test on scrap first - every batch of wood is different.

Driver keeps slipping out

Cam-out is a bit fit problem. Use a fresh PH2 bit, seat it fully, and push straight. If you prefer no slip at all, order these with a square drive head - Robertson geometry holds the bit like a key.

Screws snap halfway in

That is what drywall screws do - they are hard and brittle. A proper wood screw is case-hardened: tough shell, ductile core. If one still breaks, the pilot hole is too small, not the screw.

Threads feel loose and wobbly

Cheap batches get inconsistent forming. We run C1022 and check thread profile and case depth per lot before shipping. What lands in your bin matches the drawing.

Head won't sit flush

Q1: Do black e-coat wood screws rust?

  1. They resist it far better than black oxide. E-coat is a real epoxy film, not a dip. It still is not stainless - keep these to indoor and dry applications and they will not bloom rust on you. For exterior exposure, use 304 or coated exterior screws.

Q2: What size pilot hole for a #6 wood screw?

  1. Softwood: 1/8 in. (3.2 mm). Hardwood: 3/32 in. (2.4 mm). For 1/2 in. screws in softwood you can often skip the pilot entirely - the sharp point handles it. Hardwood always gets a pilot.

Q3: E-coat vs black oxide - what is the difference?

  1. Black oxide is a conversion coating, basically for looks and light lubrication, and it offers little rust protection. E-coat deposits an epoxy film that actually seals the steel. That is why the salt spray numbers are in a different league.

Q4: Can I use these screws outdoors?

  1. Short answer: no, not for wet exterior work. E-coat beats black oxide indoors and in humid shops, but decks, fences and coastal air call for stainless or a purpose-built exterior coating. We make those too - ask.

  1. For anything holding two pieces of wood together, use a wood screw. Drywall screws are brittle, have a shallow thread, and they snap or strip in furniture work. That is the single most common fastener mistake we see.
