Q1:What's the difference between self-tapping and self-drilling screws?

Self-tapping screws cut their own threads into a pre-drilled hole. Self-drilling screws (Tek-style) have a drill-bit tip, so they make the hole and the threads in one pass. For light sheet metal, wood, plastic, and aluminum, self-tapping is usually the right call - and it leaves a cleaner hole than a Tek point.

Q2:Do I need a pilot hole for these screws in sheet metal?

For thin sheet metal - up to about 1/16" - usually not. The Type AB point taps in directly. On thicker steel, drill a pilot hole near the thread's minor diameter: roughly 0.107" for #6 and 0.131" for #8. When in doubt, drill. A stripped hole costs more time than a pilot hole ever will.

Q3:Will the black oxide finish rust?

No, and here's the key: the screw underneath is 304 stainless. The black oxide is a surface treatment for looks and anti-galling - not a plating that can wear off. Compare that to zinc-plated carbon steel, which streaks rust the first time it gets wet. Outdoors, 304 holds up far better.

Q4:Are stainless steel screws strong enough for metal-to-metal work?

For everyday sheet metal loads, yes - 304 cold-formed screws are the standard choice. Two things matter more than raw strength: the pilot hole and the length. If the screw itself has to carry real shear, step up one diameter rather than pushing a longer #8.

Q5:Can I use these screws in wood, plastic, or aluminum?

 You can. Wood: drive slowly so the threads cut instead of burn. Plastic: pilot slightly above the minor diameter so the thread doesn't crack the part. Aluminum: fine, but back off the torque - 304 grabs soft aluminum hard and will tell you when to stop.

Q6:Why do my Phillips screws keep stripping?

Three usual suspects. A worn PH2 bit. Too much speed. Or the bit not seated fully before you pull the trigger. Fix: fresh bit, firm downward pressure, low RPMs as the head seats. Cam-out is the screw telling you to slow down - not to lean harder.

Q7:304 vs 410 stainless - which is better for screws?

304 (A2) is austenitic: the most corrosion-resistant common grade, non-magnetic, right for outdoor and coastal work. 410 is martensitic: harder and magnetic, often used where the screw has to drill into hard steel, but it rusts faster. Rust resistance first - pick 304. Drilling hard steel - pick 410 or carbon.
